Tinubu Sets Sail for Brazil, Japan for One-on-One Diplomatic Discussions
President Bola Tinubu's Multi-Nation Official Visit
President Bola Tinubu embarked on an official visit to Japan, Brazil, and United Arab Emirates, marking his first international trip since taking office on May 29, 2023. The journey began with attending the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, from August 20 to 22, 2025.
At TICAD9, themed "Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa," President Tinubu's agenda focused on positioning Nigeria as a prime investment destination to Japanese business leaders, attending plenary sessions, and participating in bilateral meetings to deepen economic cooperation between Nigeria and Japan. The conference also aimed to promote opportunities for technology transfer, innovation, human capital development, job creation, and industrialization aligned with Nigeria’s economic goals.
In addition, President Tinubu met CEOs of Japanese companies with investments in Nigeria and sought to strengthen Nigeria-Japan bilateral ties by leveraging Japan’s cutting-edge technologies through collaboration and investment initiatives.
Before arriving in Japan, President Tinubu made a scheduled stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, en route to Japan and then Brazil. The details of his bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva were not explicitly outlined, but the visit was likely intended to expand Nigeria-Brazil relations, similar to the Japan leg aimed at enhancing investment, trade, and diplomatic ties.
During his stay in Brazil, President Tinubu will hold bilateral talks, focusing on expanding Nigeria-Brazil relations. The visit is scheduled from August 24 to 25.
TICAD9, held every three years either in Japan or Africa, focuses on Africa's economic growth, improved business climate, private sector investment, and sustainable development. The conference also addresses peace, stability, and human security across the continent.
This comprehensive diplomatic outreach reflects Nigeria’s broader foreign policy goal of deepening trade, investment, and technological cooperation with Asia, Latin America, and beyond.
