Tinubu Endorses Strategic Shift Towards Preference for Domestic Products and Services

Forget about shopping abroad, it's all about supporting local industries now! That's the gist of President Bola Tinubu's freshly-approved policy, dubbed "Renewed Hope: Nigeria Comes First!"

The policy is all about prioritizing Nigerian goods, services, and know-how when spending public funds. According to our sources, this move aims to shift the focus of government spending towards local industries and reducing the reliance on imports.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, spilled the beans after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. He expressed that the directive is designed to place Nigeria at the heart of every kobo the government spends.

An Executive Order is projected to be issued in the coming days to give the policy the teeth it needs to be enforced across all government activities.

Did someone say local content? Yes, this policy prioritizes it big time! The focus is on empowering Nigerian industries, fostering economic growth, and reshaping government spending and procurement processes to favor domestic capacity.

If there's a local option available, government entities have to refrain from purchasing foreign goods or services. The Attorney-General has been tasked with drafting the Executive Order to legally enforce this policy.

The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) will be charged with the responsibility of revising and enforcing new guidelines that favor local manufacturers and service providers. This includes the creation of a Local Content Compliance Framework to maintain a register of high-quality Nigerian suppliers regularly engaged by the government.

A heads-up for MDAs: there's an immediate deadline to audit their 2025 procurement plans and submit revised versions that comply with the new policy standards. The directive clearly states that "no procurement of foreign goods or services already available in Nigeria shall proceed without justification and a BPP waiver."

This policy, while echoing the spirit of the "America First" doctrine under former US President Donald Trump, represents a uniquely Nigerian approach to economic nationalism and prioritizing domestic interests in government spending. Let the local industries boom, my friends!
