NDLEA's Enhanced Efforts Under Tinubu Administration

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) continues to play a vital role in Nigeria's security architecture, with its focus on combating drug trafficking and abuse. Under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, the agency has experienced significant strengthening, reflecting the administration's commitment to addressing drug-related issues as a national security concern.

In a recent development, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu announced the commissioning of 46 new operational vehicles for the NDLEA, aimed at amplifying the agency's operational presence, strengthening deterrence, and ensuring that no drug trafficker escapes justice. The vehicles, which passed strict due process, were procured by the Bureau of Public Procurement, with the Director-General, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, confirming their acquisition.

Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, the NDLEA's Chairman/Chief Executive, expressed gratitude for President Tinubu's unwavering support, which facilitated the vehicle procurement. Marwa also praised his team for their sustained commitment, discipline, and energy, which have transformed the agency into a result-oriented force effectively addressing the threats posed by illicit drugs.

The vehicle commissioning ceremony took place on August 13, 2025, at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja. The event was marked by praises from various quarters, with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, describing the vehicle procurement as a significant boost to the agency's operational response capability.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, lauded the President's support and Marwa's leadership, while Ribadu promised full backing from the Office of the National Security Adviser and coordination with other security agencies like the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Customs Service, and NAFDAC.

The enhanced support for the NDLEA is a strategic move aimed at countering drug-related destabilization and maintaining national security. The agency has made significant strides under Marwa's leadership, with over 5.5 million kilogrammes of assorted drugs seized, 40,887 suspects arrested, and 8,682 convictions secured with asset forfeitures to the Federal Government.

In addition to these achievements, the NDLEA has conducted over 8,698 War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation activities in various locations and promoted 15 Commanders of Narcotics (CN) to Assistant Commanders General of Narcotics (ACGN). Furthermore, 24,173 drug users were treated and rehabilitated across 30 rehab centres.

These efforts demonstrate the Tinubu administration's commitment to addressing drug abuse and trafficking, which Marwa linked to many security challenges in the country, including kidnapping, armed robbery, insurgency, and cult violence. By tackling drug-related issues head-on, the administration aims to create a safer and more stable Nigeria.
