Tinubu affirms Yelwa's position as Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC once more

The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has announced the renewal of Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa's appointment as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. The reappointment, effective for a second and final term of four years, was made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and is in accordance with Section 93 of the Electricity Act, 2023.

Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, issued a statement confirming the reappointment. The announcement was made on Wednesday.

Yelwa, who has been leading N-HYPPADEC since his initial appointment, has been instrumental in driving innovations and notable progress in the commission. His first term was marked by significant strides in infrastructural development, youth empowerment, and sustainable initiatives.

One of Yelwa's key projects has been the revival of the Bida water scheme, aimed at resolving a 15-year water supply challenge affecting around 600,000 households in Bida town and its environs. The water project, which is currently at approximately 70% completion, includes the installation of a 5MB transformer connected to a 33KVA power line to improve electricity supply to the water treatment infrastructure.

In his renewed term, Yelwa aims to enhance resource mobilization by fostering partnerships with state governments, the National Assembly, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders, rather than relying solely on federal government funding. This innovative approach is intended to accelerate development efforts and expand the commission’s impact.

N-HYPPADEC's responsibilities include environmental management, infrastructure development, and improving the livelihoods of affected communities. Under Yelwa's leadership, the commission has been focused on promoting infrastructural development in hydroelectric power producing communities, empowering youth and fostering sustainable initiatives, reviving and completing critical projects like the Bida water scheme, enhancing power supply to hydroelectric communities, and innovating funding models through broad partnerships.

President Tinubu has urged Yelwa to build on the achievements recorded by the Commission during his first term and to consolidate on the gains made. He has also asked Yelwa to bring greater innovation and dedication to the discharge of its mandate, and to ensure N-HYPPADEC delivers on its statutory mandate.

The reappointment of Yelwa has received positive recognition from government officials, traditional leaders, and the population benefiting from commission projects. The President's confidence in Yelwa's leadership and vision is a testament to the progress made under his leadership and the potential for further growth in the future.
