Rant Corner

The CSU/FW city council faction has slammed the work of the German Post, with citizens reporting letters taking up to a week to travel within the city limits. DHL has responded to the allegations, aiming to calm the storm.

Munich - Lost in limbo: letters taking weeks to arrive and citizen complaints piling up from various districts. Even deliveries within the city can take several workdays, and in extreme cases, more than a week. "This creates unnecessary uncertainty, especially for time-sensitive shipments and deadlines," the council warned.

They demanded that the mayor push the German Post AG to step up its game and improve mail delivery reliability. The city of Munich should also take steps to restore the post service's dependability.

"The trip to the mailbox shouldn't be a gamble," said faction leader Manuel Pretzl (CSU). Missed deadlines are simply unacceptable. "Reliability isn't a luxury; it's a basic requirement for mail service." He urged Mayor Dieter Reiter to take sufficient action with the German Post and demand improvements. "The people of Munich deserve reliable delivery," Pretzl emphasized.

CSU/FW critics of delayed mail delivery in Munich: DHL responds to allegations

DHL initially pointed to the implementation of a new Postal Act that took effect on January 1, 2025. "This regulation stipulates that 95 percent of letters sent within Germany must be delivered no later than the third and 99 percent by the fourth working day after dispatch," a spokesperson explained. Since the year's start, the German Post has been delivering letters, typically, on the second working day after dispatch.

With approximately 42 million letters and 6.7 million parcels delivered daily across Germany, "as a comprehensive postal service provider, we cannot rule out irregularities," the spokesperson admitted. Sometimes, due to short-term illnesses or adverse weather conditions, operational problems may arise, causing delays or misplaced shipments. However, these are "exceptions that barely affect the vast number of shipments we handle daily."

DHL moves to adapt to the changing times

DHL is working to optimize its logistics and increase operational efficiency to tackle the criticism and improve mail service consistency. One of the ways they're doing this is by sorting out shipments with delivery times of up to four days (E+4), such as advertising mail (Dialogpost), and dividing them into an A-part and a B-part of the delivery tour. This allows them to better manage shipment volumes and bundles deliveries for one household more effectively, reducing overall delivery time.

Leaving Munich: Letter center relocation won't affect delivery quality, claims DHL

The recently announced move of the letter center from Munich to Germering will have "no negative impact on delivery quality and logistical processes," DHL assured. Instead, they view the new center west of Munich as a long-term commitment to the postal sector in Germany. DHL is continuing to invest in the modernization of its network and will optimize productivity for more efficient operations.

DHL takes every customer complaint seriously and is prepared to investigate specific cases. They provide various contact options, such as calling their central customer hotline (0228/433 31 12). They also maintain close communication with the city of Munich and keep its political representatives informed.
