Time set for Trump and Putin's Kremlin encounter
In a significant development, US President Donald Trump has arranged a bilateral meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marking a historic step as the two leaders had been distant before. The anticipated talks are framed as a critical, urgent effort to establish direct dialogue and make progress towards peace in Ukraine.
Trump emphasized the necessity of this direct dialogue, stating that it is essential to avoid wasting time. He described his call with Putin where he explained the plan: first Putin and Zelenskyy would meet, then if that goes well, Trump would meet with them to finalize an agreement.
Trump conveyed a sense of urgency during discussions with European leaders, insisting that a delay of "a month or two" in talks would lead to thousands more deaths. He pushed for immediate action, calling Putin to try to set up the Zelenskyy meeting quickly.
The Russian delegation for the talks includes Yuri Ushakov, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and Kirill Dmitriev, who is responsible for US negotiations. Kirill Dmitriev's role is crucial, as he will be instrumental in the negotiations.
The talks are scheduled to take place at 9:30 PM CEST, and while the location was initially stated as Moscow, it has been changed to a different location. The exact location of the talks has not been specified.
The main goal of the talks is to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine, although the talks are not limited to the conflict in Ukraine. The negotiations will not include Kyiv's representation.
Following the talks, a joint press conference by Putin and Trump is planned. The summit is not just about resolving the conflict in Ukraine, but it is also an opportunity for both leaders to discuss other matters of mutual interest.
