Tim Morehouse shows support for the 2016 U.S. Olympic fencing team, expressing optimism for their chances.
Tim Morehouse, a three-time U.S. Olympian and native of the Riverdale section of the Bronx, opened The Tim Morehouse Fencing Club on the Upper West Side last October. The founder of the fencing club, which aims to teach not just fencing but Olympic values, is now focused on growing and impacting fencing in New York City.
Morehouse will not participate in the 2016 Summer Games in Rio, but many of his teammates from the London 2012 Summer Olympics will compete in August. The U.S. fencing team, according to Morehouse, is the best the country has ever sent to the Olympics. Alexander Massialas, Gerek Meinhardt, and Miles Chamley-Watson, all fencers on the men’s foil team, have been ranked first or second in the world rankings.
Nzingha Prescod and Daryl Homer, both New Yorkers, are also part of the U.S. Olympic fencing team. Homer, known to Morehouse for 25 years, is a promising talent in the sport. Morehouse expressed his love for the fencers from New York City, stating they share a unique bond.
Morehouse believes the goals of the U.S. fencing team are now focused on winning gold medals. Representing New York City while competing does not phase him and his fellow New Yorkers. Morehouse hopes to add to the legacy of New York fencing and prepare future Olympic gold medalists.
The Tim Morehouse Fencing Club is located on the Upper West Side and brings together elements of Morehouse's life. It allows him to teach children from Harlem, a community close to his heart, and continue his passion for the sport. Despite transitioning into coaching, Morehouse occasionally fences with past teammates and offers advice.
The 2016 Summer Olympics is set up for a breakthrough in fencing, with the U.S. team poised for success. Morehouse is committed to ensuring that New York City plays a significant role in this potential golden era for American fencing.
