Tigers Struggle to Convert Opportunities, Guardians Win 6-1 in AL Wild Card Series

The Detroit Tigers, led by Riley Green, faced off against the Cleveland Guardians in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series. The Tigers struggled to convert opportunities, leaving 15 runners stranded, their highest total since the 2009 AL Championship Series. The Guardians capitalized on this, winning 6-1 and breaking open the game with a five-run eighth inning.

The Tigers' batting woes were evident from the start. They went 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position, a significant factor in their loss. Manager A.J. Hinch pinch-hit for Riley Green in the seventh inning, but the Tigers couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. The Guardians, meanwhile, went 2 for 3 in the eighth inning against Detroit's relievers, scoring five runs to secure the victory.

The turning point came in the fourth inning. A video review ruled that Zach McKinstry was tagged out at third base, overturning a potential 2-1 lead for the Tigers. Javier Báez's lone hit in the fourth, a single to score Riley Green, was the Tigers' only highlight. Riley Green supported McKinstry's decision to try and grab an extra base, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Tigers' batting struggles.

Brayan Rocchio's go-ahead solo homer and Bo Naylor's three-run shot in the eighth inning proved decisive. The Tigers' inability to convert opportunities cost them dearly, as the Guardians took a 2-0 lead in the series. The Tigers will need to improve their batting with runners in scoring position if they hope to stay in the series.
