Take a peek into the dark underbelly of Portugal, where a sinister, radical extremist group, known as the Movimento Armilar Lusitano (MAL), was busted. This nefarious cabal had their sights set on creating chaos, with plans for attacks even on the parliament in Lisbon!
In a dramatic sweep spanning 15 raids across Lisbon and its outskirts, the cops nabbed six suspects. This undercover operation unearthed a plethora of incriminating evidence: explosives, firearms, weapons, ammunition, IT equipment, and 3D printers – equipment instrumental in their lethal manufacturing schemes.
The arrestees were accused of working hand-in-hand to establish a terrorist organization, spreading vile, hateful messages, inciting violence, and illegal weapon possession. But that's not all – shockingly, among those detained was a high-ranking police officer!
According to Manuela Santos, head of the Anti-Terror Unit (UNCT) of the criminal police, it was jaw-dropping to witness the sophistication of the recovered materials.
Raising Alarm Bells
The MAL had been entrenching itself, recruiting members, and meticulously planning targeted atrocities, including assaults on prestigious institutions like the parliament.
Portugal has long been on high alert, warning of a surge in illicit activities by far-right and other anti-system groups. Screams for more preventative measures become louder as Santos pointed out that this unsettling trend has escalated exponentially since the pandemic.
Media and politicians welcomed the police operation, but it also catalyzed unease. The police director, Luís Neves, expressed deep concerns, warning, "We are extremely worried about the escalating far-right activities in this country. It's bloody dangerous. We never imagined we'd encounter the usage of 3D-printed weapons here in Portugal."
Catarina Moreira de Carvalho, a notable researcher specializing in violent extremism and radicalization, also voiced her concerns in "Diario de Notícias". She is terrified of the future, advocating for urgent reinforcements of preventative measures.
Portugal's Ugly Truth
In a nutshell, the MAL relied on 3D printers to manufacture firearms and explosives for their terror-filled agenda. Launched in approximately 2018, the MAL intensified its activities significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, promoting intolerance, hate, and violence especially toward immigrants and refugees.
The group's dismantlement in mid-2025 followed years of surveillance and investigation. Arresting six members, including a police officer, the operation included 15 search warrants executed by the Unidade Nacional Contra-Terrorismo (National Counter-Terrorism Unit) of the Polícia Judiciária (Judiciary Police). The investigation traced back to around 2021–2022, triggered by extreamist online activities and the sharing of confidential documents linked to the group.
The arrestees faced severe accusations, including terrorism-related crimes, hate speech, incitement to violence, and possession of prohibited weapons, including those made using 3D printing technology.
