Even in an outdoor pool, there are winter sports options - Thuringia's winter wonderland opens with deep snow and new upgrades
Winter sports enthusiasts can now enjoy deep snow across Thuringia. Ski lifts have opened in several key locations, and groomed slopes are ready for sledding and tubing. The region's 708 kilometres of cross-country trails are also in use, offering plenty of options for outdoor fun.
The Thuringian Forest has received several centimetres of snow, making conditions ideal for winter activities. Major ski lifts in Oberhof, Schmücke, and Inselsberg are fully operational. Smaller lifts in Neuhaus, Masserberg, and Goldlauter have also started running, giving visitors more choices.
For those who prefer cross-country skiing, the region's extensive 708-kilometre trail network is open. This weekend, an unusual venue—a converted outdoor swimming pool—will even host cross-country skiing. Oberhof's groomed slopes are also available for sledding and tubing.
Behind the scenes, preparations are underway for future events. Snow cannons in Thuringia were recently upgraded by the Thüringer Wintersportzentrum Oberhof and local organisers. These improvements will support the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, set to take place in Oberhof from 13 to 23 February 2026.
With deep snow and well-maintained facilities, Thuringia is now a prime destination for winter sports. Skiers, sledders, and cross-country enthusiasts have multiple locations to choose from. The upgrades to snow cannons also ensure reliable conditions for upcoming international competitions.
