Summer Profit, Ceramics and Printmaking in Grey Outlooks - Thuringia's Sommergewinn festival defies chilly weather with age-old traditions
Thuringia's spring celebrations kicked off with a mix of tradition and chilly weather. The annual Sommergewinn festival in Eisenach drew crowds despite grey skies and temperatures hovering near 10°C. At its heart was the age-old clash between Frau Sunna and Herr Winter, a playful debate marking summer's triumph over the cold season.
The festival's centrepiece unfolded on Eisenach's Marktplatz, where a lively staged argument between Frau Sunna and Herr Winter took place. This symbolic battle, representing summer's victory, was part of a grand parade featuring over 1,200 participants. Forty groups, ten marching bands, and forty ornately decorated wagons—pulled by more than 100 horses—wove through the town.
Despite the damp and cloudy conditions, organisers confirmed the debate would go ahead as planned. The event is a long-standing tradition, blending folklore with community spirit. Elsewhere in Thuringia, cultural activities continued throughout the weekend. On Sunday, **Printmaking Day** offered workshops, live demonstrations, and exhibitions across Altenburg, Erfurt, and Weimar. Museums, print studios, and artists' workshops opened their doors to visitors eager to explore the craft. Earlier in the month, ceramic enthusiasts had their own celebration. On March 14 and 15, around 50 artists participated in the **Day of Open Pottery Studios**, welcoming the public into their workshops to showcase their work.
The Sommergewinn festival carried on despite the unseasonable weather, keeping its traditions alive. With parades, debates, and cultural events across the region, Thuringia's spring festivities provided a mix of heritage and hands-on experiences. The celebrations will now give way to summer activities, as communities prepare for warmer months ahead.
