Over 120,000 Photovoltaic Systems in Thuringia - Thuringia’s solar boom hits 3,200 megawatts with 122,000 new systems
Thuringia has expanded its solar installation capacity with over 122,000 operational photovoltaic systems. These installations now generate around 3,200 megawatts of power each year. Solar energy makes up more than a quarter of the region’s total renewable output.
In 2025, the state added over 21,000 new solar power systems. Many of these were balcony modules, but rooftop and ground-mounted arrays were also installed. Despite the growth, the number of new installations was lower than in the previous two years.
Most of Thuringia’s solar infrastructure is integrated into buildings. Energy Minister Tilo Kummer, from the BSW party, has backed the expansion of well-planned solar projects. He believes these systems help reduce reliance on fossil fuels, support the local energy economy, and lower energy costs for residents.
The state’s solar capacity now stands at 3,200 megawatts annually. With over 122,000 systems in operation, solar energy remains a key part of Thuringia’s renewable strategy. The focus on building-integrated solar panel solutions continues to shape its energy landscape.
