Thuringian Ski Resorts Closed Due to Severe Weather Warning - One Open - Thuringia’s ski resorts battle storms, forcing widespread Friday closures

Stormy weather has disrupted skiing across Thuringia, forcing most resorts to shut their doors. Only the Heubach Ski Area stayed open on Friday, though visitor numbers dropped sharply. Strong winds and severe alerts have kept slopes empty, but some locations plan to reopen over the weekend.

High winds and storm warnings led to widespread closures on Friday. The Silbersattel Ski Arena near Steinach and the Oberhof Snowpark remained shut, while the Heubach Ski Area in Masserberg stayed operational until 4:30 p.m. Gusts reached up to 75 km/h at elevations above 800 metres, discouraging many skiers. Just 150 to 200 people visited Heubach, far fewer than usual.

The Schmiedefeld Winter World in Suhl will kick off its season on Saturday, opening from 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Heubach will close early at 4:30 p.m. to host the Thuringian Ski Association’s Zwergencup youth competition. Both Silbersattel and Oberhof also intend to welcome guests again on Saturday, provided conditions improve.

Despite Friday’s disruptions, several resorts aim to resume operations by Saturday. Heubach’s early closure will make way for a youth ski event, while Schmiedefeld launches its season. The return of better weather could bring more visitors back to the slopes.
