Thuringians spend a three-digit million amount for bio - Thuringia's organic boom fuels Germany's €17 billion food revolution
Germany's organic food market is growing steadily, with nationwide spending reaching nearly €17 billion in 2024. In Thuringia, the sector has seen a notable rise, with over 500 organic farms now operating across the state. This trend reflects both increasing consumer demand and expanded agricultural commitment to organic practices.
Thuringia's organic farming industry has expanded significantly in recent years. Between 2020 and 2024, the share of organic farmland in the state rose from 11.5% to 17.2%. Government support programmes and higher consumer interest have driven this growth.
Residents of Thuringia spent around €188 million on organic products in 2024 alone. Many shoppers in the region actively choose organic food, reinforcing its importance in local markets. The state's organic sector will soon take centre stage at Biofach, the world's leading trade fair for organic products, held in Nuremberg from February 10 to 13.
Nationally, the upward trajectory continues. Sales of organic food are expected to surpass €18 billion in 2025, building on the strong figures recorded last year.
The organic food market in Germany shows no signs of slowing down. Thuringia's growing number of organic farms and rising sales highlight the region's role in this trend. With projections pointing to even higher spending next year, the sector remains on a firm upward path.
