Earlier Start to Motorcycle Season - Police Warn to Be Cautious - Thuringia's motorcycle deaths surge as warmer weather brings deadly risks
Warmer weather has brought motorcyclists back onto the roads in Thuringia. But with the return of riding season comes a sharp rise in risks. Officials warn that bikers face far higher dangers than car drivers, especially among younger riders.
In 2023, 17 motorcyclists or moped riders lost their lives in Thuringia's road accidents. This year, three have already died, with another three suffering severe injuries. Last Sunday, a 17-year-old female rider was killed in a collision with a car in the Gotha district.
Nationwide, the risks are even clearer. According to Destatis, 529 motorcycle-related deaths occurred across Germany in 2023. DEKRA's data shows motorcyclists crash at twice the rate of car drivers per vehicle on the road. The chance of a fatal accident is four times higher.
Mario Lindner of DEKRA's Erfurt branch highlights that riders under 35 are most at risk. Speeding and tailgating remain the top causes of crashes in the region.
Police and KÜS are calling for caution. They urge bikers to start the season carefully, ride defensively, and inspect their machines thoroughly. Drivers are also reminded to watch for motorcycles and expect stricter speed checks.
Authorities stress that both riders and drivers must adapt to shared roads. With fatalities already recorded this year, the focus remains on reducing speed and improving awareness. Checks on bike conditions and riding behaviour could help lower the risks in the coming months.
