Renovation of Thuringian Castles Progresses - Thuringia’s €200M castle revival transforms historic landmarks across the region
Thuringia’s castle restoration programme has reached a new milestone this year. Three major projects have now been completed, with work continuing at 13 active sites. The initiative, backed by a 200 million euro budget, aims to preserve and upgrade historic landmarks across the region.
The latest finished projects include stabilisation work on the ruins of Ehrenstein and Bad Liebenstein castles. The tower roof of Weißensee Castle has also been fully restored. These efforts form part of a wider push to modernise and protect Thuringia’s heritage sites.
At Schwarzburg Castle, improvements are underway to enhance accessibility and build a new visitor service area in the main building. The work is set to complete by next summer. Meanwhile, planning and construction contracts have surged to around 44 million euros—double the amount from last year.
Looking ahead, Sondershausen Palace and Heidecksburg Castle in Rudolstadt will take centre stage. Both sites are slated for major restoration work, with projects expected to begin by the end of next year.
The restoration programme continues to advance, with federal and state funding evenly split. Thirteen sites remain active, while key projects like Schwarzburg Castle’s upgrades move toward completion. The initiative ensures that Thuringia’s historic castles and palaces stay accessible and well-preserved for future generations.
