Carp Pond in Ilmenau Drained - Thuringia's Autumn Fish Harvest Begins After Summer Drought Challenges
A 16-hectare fish pond in Ilmenau has been harvested, marking the start of the autumn harvest season for Thuringia's ponds. This comes after a challenging summer for many fish farms in the region due to drought and high water temperatures.
Last year, Thuringia produced around 807 tons of table fish, a slight decrease from 2023. There are approximately 50 businesses in the region dedicated to raising table fish. The Ilmenau Pond Landscape Association expects to harvest about four tons of fish, including carp, tench, and other freshwater fish, from the 16-hectare pond.
The Auleber Fischzucht, the primary fish farming organization in Thuringia, faced difficulties in summer 202x due to drought and high water temperatures. Despite these challenges, the harvest yielded 165 tons of carp, contributing to one fifth of Thuringia's table fish production.
The Ministry of the Environment has provided retroactive funding of around €180,000 to support fish farms in Thuringia. The successful harvest in Ilmenau signals the resilience of the region's fish farming industry, despite the summer's harsh conditions.
