Thuringian Consumers Use Less Power, Energy Companies Generate More Revenue
Households and businesses in Thuringia consumed less electricity in 2022, yet energy providers in the region experienced a considerable revenue surge. This revelation was shared by the State Statistical Office in Erfurt on a recent Wednesday. The report indicated that electricity sales to end-users in Thuringia decreased by 2.1% to approximately 10.1 billion kilowatt-hours compared to the previous year. Conversely, energy sales revenue in Thuringia increased by an astounding 19.9% to 2.3 billion euros.
Higher Revenues from Industrial Sector
Energy providers saw their revenues skyrocket in the industrial sector particularly, increasing by an impressive 42.8% to 872 million euros in comparison to the previous year. Their earnings from private households and housing associations amounted to 853 million euros, representing a 0.5% growth from 2021. According to statisticians, around 43% of the electricity consumed was used by industrial companies, 29% for private domestics, and the remaining share for other clients.

The Russian assault on Ukraine in February 2022 sparked an energy crisis that significantly influenced electricity and gas prices in Germany, including Thuringia. The skyrocketing energy prices had a significant impact on both consumers and suppliers in regions like Erfurt.
