git'er done: The New Boss for Germany's Home Defense Company
Thuringian Home Guard Company Transitions to New Leadership - Thuringian Home Guard Company Transitions Under New Command
In a solemn ceremony reminiscent of history, the Thuringian Home Defense Company of the German Armed Forces took its place beneath a new command - a striking contrast to the Nazi Germany defeat in World War II, eight decades ago. at Schloss Ehrenstein, Ohrdruf (Gotha's district).
Colonel Siegfried Zeyer, in charge of the new crew, underscored the significance of the day's symbolism. "This day serves a double warning," he declared. "Firstly, no wars should ever originate from German soil or with German involvement." He further added, "Secondly, it's crucial that we do everything to ensure Germany remains invincible to military attacks, for the Allies managed to dismantle the Wehrmacht and its allies in World War II, but they didn't prevent a power-hungry tyrant from initiating World War II."
Previously, the Thuringian Home Defense Company operated under the State Command of Thuringia, but now, it's part of the Home Defense Regiment 5, boasting three companies from Hesse and one from Saxony. The Saxon company was equally inducted into the regiment during the ceremony.
Nestled in Ohrdruf, the German Armed Forces maintain a sprawling training area, with the regiment's staff residing there. During the ceremony, nine fresh recruits swore an oath to serve as soldiers of the Federal Republic of Germany with unwavering loyalty.
The formation of home defense forces is a response to Russia's aggressive actions in Eastern Europe, particularly the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These troops are deployed solely within Germany to defend critical infrastructure, such as power plants or rail facilities, and assist in moving NATO troops through Germany towards the Eastern front of the military alliance. The majority of the soldiers in home defense are reservists.
Local politician, Thuringia's Minister President Mario Voigt (CDU), stated during the ceremony that the soldiers were taking on a responsibility to safeguard Germany at a time when democracy and freedom faced renewed threats. "This is invaluable," he emphasized. According to Voigt, the Home Defense Regiment 5 is more than a military force. "It's a demonstration of loyalty, a commitment to security, and a defense of freedom and democracy."
