Defending German Soil: Thuringian Home Defense Company Joins New Regiment
House Security Firm in Thuringia under Fresh Management - Thuringian Home Guard Company switches command structure
Kicking off its new chapter, the Thuringian Home Defense Company of the German Army officially integrated with their new regiment on the very 80th anniversary of Germany's World War II defeat. Led by Colonel Siegfried Zeyer, the ceremony took place at Schloss Ehrenstein in Ohrdruf, Gotha's district.
Zeyer addressed the gathering, emphasizing the symbolic importance of this day. "We're standing at a double-edged sword," he declared. "On one hand, no more wars should ever rise from German soil or involve German participation. On the other hand, we must ensure that Germany never faces a military attack due to a lack of preparedness. Remember, the Allies defeated the Wehrmacht and their allies in World War II – but they couldn’t stop a tyrannical despot from initiating World War II."
In the past, the Thuringian Home Defense Company had been under the Thuringia Command, but it is now officially part of the Home Defense Regiment 5, which also includes companies from Hesse and Saxony. The recent ceremony in Ohrdruf also welcomed Saxony's company into the new regiment.
Situated in Ohrdruf, the German Army maintains a vast training area, boasting a history of military use. During the event, nine new recruits of the regiment vowed to serve the Federal Republic of Germany loyally as soldiers.
The groundbreaking establishment of home defense forces within the German Army arises from Russia's hostile actions in Eastern Europe, particularly the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These troops will only be activated domestically when required for defense purposes, safeguarding vital infrastructure such as power stations or railway facilities, and aiding in the relocation of NATO troops to the military alliance's eastern frontier. Most of the troops in home defense are reservists.
Mario Voigt, Thuringia's Minister President (CDU), stated during the ceremony that these troops are undertaking responsibility for Germany in a time when democracy and liberty are under threat once more. "The priceless value of your service cannot be measured," he commented. Home Defense Regiment 5, established in October, represents more than a military unit, added Voigt. "It symbolizes a commitment to the nation, a commitment to security, and a commitment to freedom and democracy."

Background:During World War II, Ohrdruf served as the site of Ohrdruf-Nord, a subcamp of the notorious Buchenwald concentration camp, where prisoners were subjected to abhorrent labor conditions. Militarily speaking, Ohrdruf lies within a strategic location.
Military Context:In times of perceived threats, military regiments like home defense units emerge, bolstering defenses and supporting national defense initiatives. During World War II, Germany faced onslaughts from both the Western Allies and the Soviet Union, compelling the formation of multiple military units to strengthen defenses and secure key territories.
Purpose:The primary objectives of such regiments usually entail increasing military strength, ensuring the security of strategic locations, and reinforcing regular military units in defending against enemy infiltrations. In the context of Eastern Europe, these regiments would function as part of a broader effort to counter Russian expansion and protect German territories. However, information on the Home Defense Regiment 5's specific establishment and operations remains limited.
