Let's get straight to it! The Thuringian Home Defense Company, part of the infamous German Army, has got itself a shiny new commander and regiment. This transitions comes eight decades post-WWII, with a military ceremony at Schloss Ehrstein, Ohrdruf (district of Gotha) serving as the grand unveiling. Colonel Siegfried Zeyer, the commander of this new regiment, highlighted the historical significance of this day during the event.

Colonel Zeyer marked the 8th of May as a double caution: "First and foremost, never again should a war brew from German soil or involvement. Second, every possible measure must be taken to safeguard Germany from any military assault, having fallen short in our defense preparations. Let's remember, the Allies defeated the Wehrmacht and its allies during WWII, but they failed to deter a power-hungry despot from triggering WWII," he said.

The Thuringian Home Defense Company has bid adieu to the Landeskommando Thuringia and is now a proud member of the Home Defense Regiment 5, sharing the spotlight with three Hessian companies and one Saxon company. The Saxon company was also welcomed into the new regiment during this spectacle in Ohrdruf.

The headquarter of this new regiment is based in Ohrdruf, where the German Army boasts a substantial training area that has seen its fair share of military action. Nine fresh recruits of the regiment vowed their allegiance to serve as loyal soldiers of the Federal Republic of Germany during the ceremony.

The German Army's Home Defense Forces were formed as a reaction to Russia's aggressive moves in Eastern Europe, primarily the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These forces are intended for deployment within Germany to defend vital infrastructure such as power plants or railway facilities, and help move NATO troops through Germany to the military alliance's eastern front. The bulk of the soldiers hail from the reserves.

Thuringia's President Mario Voigt (CDU) stated during the event that the soldiers were stepping up to shoulder the responsibility for Germany at a time when democracy and freedoms are under threat. "This is invaluable," he declared. The Home Defense Regiment 5, established in October, represents more than just a military unit; it symbolizes a commitment to the homeland, security, and freedom and democracy.
