Thuringian Defense Battalion Gets New Commander - Thuringian Home Guard Company Experiences Leadership Change
Step into the grounds of Ehrenstein Castle, Ohrdruf, as history repeats itself! A similar military ceremony marked the induction of the Thuringian Homeland Protection Company of the German Armed Forces. Eighty years since the fall of the Third Reich, the transition could not have been more symbolic.
"Two warnings echo today," emphasized Colonel Siegfried Zeyer during the ceremony. "Firstly, never again let war be waged from German soil or by German hands. Secondly, we must fortify our defenses to deter any hostile attacks. Remarkably, we once defeated the Wehrmacht and its allies in World War II. But we failed to deter an autocrat from igniting the Second World War," he added solemnly.
The Company, previously under the command of Thuringia State Command, is now under the Homeland Protection Regiment 5. Three other companies from Hesse and one from Saxony join them. Ohrdruf, home to a massive training ground used by the German military for decades, now hosts the regiment's headquarters.
