Thuringia Aims to Boost Mountain Biking Attraction

Thuringia is eager to amplify its appeal as a mountain biking tour destination, as the low mountain range's landscape provides an ideal setting for this thrill-seeking sport. However, the untapped potential continues to be an issue, according to Antonia Sturm, Managing Director of the Thuringian Forest Regional Association. She pointed out the increasing demand but lack of adequate supply, such as a coordinated and approved network of mountain biking routes in the state.

To address this, Sturm revealed the association's plans to gradually develop suitable tourist offerings, expand the network, and properly signpost the trails. Local authorities and forestry offices must be on board for this initiative, which involves considering 15 to 20 trails of varying lengths across the Thuringian Forest.

Thuringia's existing regulations permit mountain bikers to access naturally firm and paved trails, enabling riders to explore the Rennsteig high-altitude hiking trail efficiently. As of now, around 38 mountain bike tours have been marketed within the state, and there are bike parks in Steinach and Oberhof for cyclocrossers. These parks, which double as alpine ski slopes, cater to more than 19,000 bikers annually.

Growing popularity of mountain biking as a leisure activity

Mountain biking has seen a massive shift from a niche sport to a mainstream pastime, with around 16 million Germans indulging in this thrilling activity during their free time. Approximately 4.1 million of them engage in regular mountain biking. Last year, more than 1 million new mountain bikes were sold in Germany, with 82% of these being electric bikes.

The primary demographic for mountain biking is relatively young, averaging around 40 years of age, and the sport remains predominantly male-dominated, favoring off-road trails.

To enhance the mountain biking experience in Thuringia, the following strategies can be employed:

  1. Infrastructure development: This involves building new trails for various skill levels and maintaining existing ones to ensure safety and enjoyment.
  2. Route planning: By creating a comprehensive network of interconnected trails and themed routes, cyclists can explore different parts of Thuringia.
  3. Tourist infrastructure: Encourage hotels, guesthouses, and camping sites to provide bike-friendly amenities and support local businesses offering rental services and guided tours.
  4. Marketing and promotion: Launch targeted campaigns to attract more mountain bikers to Thuringia and provide detailed tourist information.
  5. Community engagement: Collaborate with local cycling clubs and community groups to develop and maintain trails, organizing events and promoting the region.
  6. Digital mapping and navigation: Create detailed digital maps of the trails and integrate them into navigation systems used by cyclists.
  7. Sustainability initiatives: Promote eco-friendly practices among cyclists and support sustainable tourism practices.

By implementing these strategies, Thuringia can significantly bolster its mountain biking tour offerings and improve the route network, making it a more appealing destination for cycling enthusiasts.
