Thuringian Bettspinnen in Apfelstädt seeks individuals from Rhône for scheduled event on 31.8.25, as per the Commission's call.
The Thuringian Spinning Competition (Thüringer Spinnwettbewerb), a traditional craft event showcasing regional textile arts and craftsmanship, is set to return to Nesse-Apfelstedt on August 31, 2025. This competition, organised by the Thuringian Trachtenjugend, a part of the Thuringian State Trachten Association e.V., has been a celebrated event in Thuringia for many years.
Held annually in various locations across Thuringia, the competition brings together spinners from all over the region. Many of these spinners spin wool from their own sheep farms in their free time, adding a personal touch to their creations. The goal of the competition is to spin the longest thread from the provided wool, with measurement using a weife and a measuring tape.
The 2025 event will follow a familiar format. Participants are asked to bring their own spinning wheel and 20 grams of sheep wool for the competition, which lasts for one hour. Last-minute interested parties should arrive by 10:00 AM on the day of the event. The competition will open with a breakfast reception at 10:00 AM and start at 10:30 AM, with the award ceremony scheduled for 12:30 PM.
The Thuringian Spinning Competition has a rich history, although detailed records of its annual locations since 2004 are not widely documented in common online resources. Previous locations include the Gutshaus Hüpstedt in the Eichsfeld in 2015, the Suhl weapons museum in 2014, and Wechmar in 2017. In 2010, the 2nd Thuringian Spinning Competition took place in Apfelstedt.
Winners will be determined in the age categories of children, youth, and adults. Ingrid Gerber from the spinning group Ahorn near Coburg and Lea Zimmermann from Oechsen in the Thuringian Rhön have previously won in the adult and youth categories respectively.
In addition to the competition, catering and entertainment will be provided during the event. The Thuringian Spinning Competition is part of the festival week "1250 Years of Apfelstedt", making it a vibrant and lively occasion for all.
For those interested in the history of the Thuringian Spinning Competition or seeking information about its annual locations, contacting Thuringian cultural institutions, local craft guilds, or the organisers of the competition directly could provide precise historical data and location listings. The Thuringian State Trachten Association also organises the Day of Thuringian Customs, an event focusing on historical crafts, musical instruments, headwear, or folk songs.
The Thuringian Spinning Competition is a unique opportunity to witness the traditional craft of spinning wool and to appreciate the skill and dedication of the participants. Whether you're a spinner, a crafter, or simply a lover of traditional arts, the Thuringian Spinning Competition is an event not to be missed.
