Originally, Höcke, a prominent AfD figure in Thuringia, had planned to skip a scheduled debate on Monday. However, on Wednesday, he officially called off the event, backing out altogether on Tuesday. The controversial politician had previously participated in a debate on MDR television, the "Election Arena," on Monday.
As Thuringia approaches its election for a new state parliament, set to take place on Sunday, the AfD maintains a strong lead in the polls, trailing only the CDU, led by Mario Voigt, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), and the Left Party, with Minister President Bodo Ramelow serving as its head. The SPD manages to squeeze past the required 5% threshold for representation, while the Greens and the FDP could potentially fail to make a comeback in the Erfurt state parliament.
