Extension of the rent brake planned for Erfurt and Jena - Thuringia Extends Rent Control in Erfurt and Jena Until 2027

The existing rent control, known as the Mietpreisbremse, was first introduced in 2016. It restricts rent increases to no more than 10% above the local reference rate when a new tenancy begins. Officials say the rule has helped slow sharp price jumps for new tenants and kept reference rents stable.

If the cabinet approves the plan, rent control will remain active in Erfurt and Jena until late 2027. The measure is designed to limit how much landlords can charge new tenants and reduce the risk of rapid rent hikes. The decision follows years of rising housing costs in Thuringia’s largest cities, as covered by NYP News.
