Thuringia's Beacon of Pride on the Brink
As the mercury rises and June arrives, a wave of colors, joy, and liveliness sweeps across the globe – this month is reserved for the LGBTQ+ community. It stands for self-expression, diversity, human rights, and a stand against bigotry and prejudice. It's a celebration our fellow Thuringians join in on, and this year, the festivities are set to take place in Jena on June 21. However, a significant financial gap threatens to dim the sparkle.
CSD Jena on "Aktenzeichen XY": The Inevitable Fallout
The thrilling energy of June, the vibrant costumes, uplifting music, and a communion of joy – these are the essential ingredients of CSD. But a grim truth is lurking behind the vibrant facade: the popular event in Jena finds itself on precarious ground. Money has gone missing; one of the funding applications has been gathering digital dust for six agonizing weeks. To add insult to injury, the organizers have come to the unsettling realization that they're dealing with a significant budget shortfall – one that, if not addressed, could spell doom for the event. "We've finally come to accept that we're still in desperate need of substantial funds," Ertel confesses.
Buckling Down for Emergency Measures
With the clock ticking, the funding application has finally started to gain some traction. But, as Ertel forebodingly elaborates, "we can't be certain if anything will come of it." With time of the essence, the team has turned to online donations platforms to bridge the financial gap. "The lawn festival stage is vital. Two bands are slated to perform, a theater group from Jena will grace us with a queer piece, and eight stunning drag queens are set to strut their stuff," Ertel emphasizes. This makes the event's success hinge on the success of the fundraising campaign.
With their goal set at €9,000, over €5,000 has been raised already. "The response has been heartwarming. People don't need to be part of the community to support us. They can simply choose to be there," Ertel warmly says. Despite the positivity, Ertel admits that if the necessary funds don't materialize, they'll need to sadly trim some expenditures. "I still hold onto the hope that we'll see a surge in donations before the CSD. I also cling onto the possibility that we might at least secure a portion of the funding we applied for. If not, we'll have to start a difficult conversation about where to save," she says.
