Thuringia's Forestry Agency, Thüringenforst, is chunking a significant sum of around eight million euros into the refurbishment and repair of forest trails this year. As Director Volker Gebhardt explained on Tuesday, this investment amounts to approximately 5% of the agency's timber revenue being funneled back into maintaining the trail infrastructure alone. The state forest boasts an impressive network of around 5000 kilometers of forest roads.

Why the generous renovation budget? Forest owners are actively restoring areas impacted by the bark beetle, resulting in damaged forest roads. Pockets of potholes appeared in the roads, and temporary ruts and mud deposits not only hindered the paths but also affected the usability for forest visitors and winter sports enthusiasts. Fortunately, private and corporate forests are eligible for funding to support these necessary repairs.
