Marvel's Thunderbolts Struggles in Second Weekend But Holds On to Top Spot

The second weekend ain't no picnic for Marvel's Thunderbolts as it's expected to drop a whopping 53%, raking in around $35 million at the North American box office according to Deadline. This estimate comes on the lower end of Box Office Pro's forecast, with the film projected to take between $34 million and $40 million. If the numbers hold, Thunderbolts will have a domestic total of $130.3 million after two weekends.

While four newcomers—RLJE/Shudder's Clown in a Cornfield, Lionsgate's Shadow Force, Vertical Entertainment's Fight or Flight, and Briarcliff Entertainment's Juliet & Romeo—are entering the fray, none of them seem capable of dethroning the MCU antihero action adventure.

Clown in a Cornfield Incredibly Strong Debut Amidst Stiff Competition

Out of all the new entries, Clown in a Cornfield is the only one predicted to make it to the top five, earning an impressive $3.9 million from 2,277 theaters, according to Deadline. This horrifying comedy directed by Eli Craig is stealing the spotlight as it faces some fierce competition from established hits like Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's Sinners, Jack Black and Jason Momoa's A Minecraft Movie, and Amazon MGM Studio's The Accountant 2.

Sinners, which has already amassed a stunning domestic total of $215.3 million, is projected by Deadline to hold on to the No. 2 spot with a $22 million haul. A Minecraft Movie, though approaching a digital streaming release, is poised to earn $8.8 million from 3,468 theaters, pushing its tally to $409.8 million. The Accountant 2 is expected to score $6.1 million from 3,402 theaters, upping its domestic total to $50.8 million.

With a reduction in the number of theaters, Thunderbolts remains in 4,330 North American theaters, ready to rumble with these contenders for box office dominance.
