Throngs of over 350,000 residents evacuate Gaza City, propelled by relentless Israeli airstrikes and territorial inroads
The United Nations (UN) has released a damning report, accusing Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. The report, compiled by a UN committee of experts, contains over 16,000 pieces of evidence supporting this conclusion.
The conflict, which has claimed over 65,000 lives so far, has resulted in a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions. The Al Shatea refugee camp in Gaza City was attacked, resulting in the deaths of 15 people. Moreover, approximately 50 Gazans were killed by the Israeli Army on Wednesday, while thousands more are fleeing south of the enclave.
The UN report points to Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, President Isaac Herzog, and former Minister of Defense Yoav Galant, as having stated the ultimate goal of the offensive is to eliminate the Palestinian population. The ground offensive in Gaza City began on Wednesday.
Israel's military is targeting Hamas, the de facto governing authority in Gaza, in an attempt to curb the ongoing violence. Thousands of people are fleeing the capital, with communication cut off in Gaza City, leaving no internet or phone services available.
Rescue teams are working tirelessly, and hospitals are overwhelmed, struggling to cope with the influx of casualties. The European Commission maintains that it is the competence of the courts to determine if a genocide is being committed or if crimes against humanity have been committed.
The UN report will serve as expert evidence to the International Criminal Court. The European Commission has not yet taken a position on whether Israel is committing genocide, but it will approve new sanctions against Tel Aviv this Wednesday. These sanctions include the suspension of the commercial agreement proposed by President Ursula von der Leyen.
The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has denounced the reality in Palestine without using the term "genocide". The UN investigation commission accusing Israel of genocide in the Gaza Strip is an independent commission appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council. The commission, led by South African human rights expert Navi Pillay, aims to have what is happening in Gaza called genocide and to determine who the culprits are.
The UN report is a call for action, urging the international community to intervene and prevent further atrocities. The fate of the Palestinians hangs in the balance, and the world watches as the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate.
