Thrilled gatherings at Asfoora camp as their shining equine star takes the lead in a 17-horse Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes race at York this coming Friday.
The Ebor Festival is set to bring excitement to York Racecourse, with several Group races scheduled over the four-day event. Here's a look at some of the key contests and their participants.
Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes
The Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes, a Group 1 race, promises a thrilling showdown. Jm Jungle, who made a Group-race breakthrough in the King George at Glorious Goodwood, will return to the fray. He'll face a formidable field that includes the likes of Jason Hart, Kerdos, Rossa Ryan, Manaccan, PJ McDonald, Night Raider, James Doyle, Rumstar, Rob Hornby, Spartan Arrow, Hollie Doyle, Arizona Blaze, David Egan, Asfoora, Oisin Murphy, Frost At Dawn, Mickael Barzalona, Mgheera, William Buick, She's Quality, James Ryan, Celandine, Tom Marquand, Sayidah Dariyan, Ryan Moore, Lady Iman, Joe Fanning, Spicy Marg, and Harry Bentley.
Among the notable runners are two-year-olds Lady Iman and Spicy Marg, who could shake up the established order. Ger Lyons-trained Lady Iman is the current favourite for the race. Asfoora, trained by Henry Dwyer, finished fourth in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes last season and fifth in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. Dwyer believes Asfoora is at her peak for the race on Friday.
Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup Stakes
In the Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup Stakes, Trawlman and Shackleton will compete. Trawlman will be up against Sweet William, among others. Notably, Shackleton will be Aidan O'Brien's sole runner, as Illinois was not declared.
Yorkshire Oaks
The Yorkshire Oaks will see a smaller field, with only four horses declared. Minnie Hauk heads Aidan O'Brien's challenge, with Whirl out.
Willie Mullins has confirmed jockey bookings for his Ebor horses, with Colin Keane to partner the red-hot favourite at York.
Trainer Henry Dwyer states there will be no excuses for Asfoora on the Knavesmire, as he hopes for her first win in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes European season on Friday. Dwyer admits it was a struggle to reach full fitness ahead of Ascot and blames the easier surface for her subsequent defeat at Goodwood.
The Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup Stakes is scheduled for 2.25, while the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes is part of the Ebor festival. Let the races begin!
