Three Unveiled Limited Comic Series Set to Debut on Our Platform Later in the Year
Comics News | March 17, 2025
IDW, the long-standing publisher of Star Trek comic books and graphic novels, has announced an ambitious slate of limited series set in the Star Trek universe. Debuting later this year, three new series offer fans a fresh perspective within the final frontier.
First, Star Trek: Red Shirts, a miniseries by writer Christopher Cantwell and artist Megan Levens, promises to delve into the backstory of Starfleet's most iconic but often overlooked characters: the red shirts. The crew of the U.S.S. Warren, led by a seasoned officer on the snow-laden planet Arkonia 89, faces a daunting mission: apprehending spies who threaten Starfleet's secrets. With threats not only from their adversaries but from the planet's unforgiving environment, the red shirts' lives and the sanctity of Starfleet hang in the balance.
Christopher Cantwell, the writer for Star Trek: Defiant, shares his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Star Trek: Red Shirts honors the nameless who bit the dust, incinerated, vaporized... They're the main characters of a suicide mission like no other." The series promises to be an electrifying melody of death, a blend of fun, danger, subversion, and celebration, according to Cantwell, all taking place in the spirit of the Original Series.
Artist Megan Levens, responsible for illustrating Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, expresses her excitement about working on this new project, "Star Trek: Red Shirts presents a chance to introduce an entirely new cast of Starfleet officers." Levens adds, "And the chance to dispatch them in delightful ways is a bonus!"
Issue #1 of Star Trek: Red Shirts, set to release in July, features cover art by Chris Shehan. Readers can expect a thrilling adventure packed with suspense, action, and a few surprises.
In August, a second five-issue limited series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - The Seeds of Destruction, debuts. Created by writer Robbie Thompson and artist Travis Mercer, the series will feature beloved characters First Officer Una Chin-Riley, Security Officer La'An Noonien-Singh, Science Officer Spock, and Nurse Christine Chapel. Adding a new twist, an adorable robot sidekick named D6 joins the crew for this chilling adventure on an icy planet with terrifying secrets lurking beneath the surface.
No specific plot details are currently available for Star Trek: Voyager - Homecoming, which is set to launch in September. The series aims to provide closure for fans who have been eagerly awaiting the resolution of the fan-favorite series for decades.
With the ending of Star Trek: Omega on the horizon, IDW is demonstrating its commitment to producing exceptional Star Trek comics. According to IDW group editor Heather Antos, "These new series show that IDW is not yet done crafting the finest Star Trek comics possible."
