In the rainy city of Guangzhou, the critical qualifying event for the World Championships is underway. The German relay teams delivered a mix of results, with some securing tickets and others facing a second chance. Here's the lowdown on who's in and who's out.

The German 4x100m and two women's relay teams have secured their spots for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The men's quartet of Kevin Kranz, Owen Ansah, Yannick Wolf, and Lucas Ansah-Peprah snatched a hard-fought second place in 38.33 seconds, while the women's 4x400m team benefited from a favorable draw to finish second in 3:28.63 minutes. The women's 4x100m relay team, minus Gina Lückenkemper, finished third, qualifying with the sixth-fastest time of 42.98 seconds.

However, not everyone can celebrate just yet. The mixed 4x400m and men's 4x400m relay teams will need to swallow their pride and try again on Sunday. Both teams finished fourth in their respective heats but have a shot at redemption after the rain delay.

While these heart-pumping relays unfolded in the drizzle, 14 nations fought tooth and nail for direct tickets to the World Relays final and the World Championships. By Saturday's end, Sunday's heats were set. All relay teams that missed the final will compete in three heats, with two teams from each heat qualifying for Tokyo.

Germany also debuted in the new mixed 4x100m relay, where women run the first two legs and men finish the race. The team, composed of Sina Mayer, Sina Kammerschmitt, Aleksandar Askovic, and Chidiera Onuoha, finished fourth in the heat. This event will not be featured at the World Championships but is slated to appear at the European Championships in 2026 and the Olympic Games in 2028.

In the grand scheme of things, the World Athletics Championships on Tokyo's agenda are in 2021, not 2025 as mentioned. Confusing, right? The World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou serve as the qualification event for these championships. Keep that in mind as you keep up with Germany's relay teams and their quest for Olympic glory!
