The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) doesn't focus on speed, but rather rewards World Championship tickets through relay competitions of their own design. China played host to a mixed performance from German relay teams. While three quartets punched their Tokyo tickets, two got another shot, and one danced for the first time.

The German 4x100-meter and two women's relay teams have earned their berths for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo (September 13-21). Led by Owen Ansah, who clocked a 9.99-second dash, the German 4x100-meter team, featuring Kevin Kranz, Yannick Wolf, Lucas Ansah-Peprah, made a splash with a second-place finish in 38.33 seconds in the heat, sealing an early qualification in Guangzhou, China.

The German women's 4x400-meter relay team, powered by Skadi Schier, Johanna Martin, Mona Meyer, and Eileen Demes, snatched another second-place victory, thanks to a fortunate draw, in 3:28.63 minutes. The 4x100-meter womens' squad, composed of Nele Jaworski, Jessica-Bianca Wessolly, Rebekka Haase, and Sophia Junk, finished third; however, their sixth-fastest time of 42.98 seconds still earned them a spot. The former Olympic bronze-medalist, Gina Lückenkemper, was absent from the sprint relay team's race.

The mixed 4x400-meter relay team, featuring Manuel Sanders, Annkathrin Hoven, Emil Agyekum, and Jana Lakner, and the men's 4x400-meter relay team, including Niklas Noah Klei, Friedrich Rumpf, Lukas Krappe, and Fabian Dammermann, were left needing another run on Sunday after finishing fourth and sixth respectively.

Fourteen nations have clinched spots for the World Championships in the 4x100-meter (men and women) and 4x400-meter (men, women, and mixed) relays. On Saturday, soggy conditions greeted contestants vying for direct tickets to the World Relays final and the World Championships. On Sunday, all relay teams that missed the final will compete in three heats. The top two teams from each heat will carry their hopes to Tokyo.

Germany geared up for the World Relays with a training camp in Kuala Lumpur. This year's World Relays will introduce the mixed 4x100-meter relay event, where women kick things off with the first two legs, followed by men crossing the line. Germany ended fourth in the preliminary round with a time of 41.43 seconds. The newcomer team, consisting of Sina Mayer, Sina Kammerschmitt, Aleksandar Askovic, and Chidiera Onuoha, delivered this performance.

  • Germany's men's 4x400-meter team may need to up their game, as they only finished fifth in the 4x400 heat and did not qualify for the final directly.
  • The mixed 4x100-meter relay event is new at the World Relays, and although Germany finished fourth, they still have a chance to improve their time and potentially qualify for the World Championships in Tokyo.
  • South Africa and Germany are among those who have strong performances in their respective heats, suggesting they have a good chance of qualifying for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. However, final qualification requirements may vary depending on overall team rankings and heat results.
