In the arena of athletics, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) awards World Championship tickets in relay events not via speedy times, but through their own competition. Navigating the rainy Guangzhou tracks, the German relay teams showcased a mix of strong performance and room for improvement. Three squads secure their spots, two will return for another run, and one prepares for its grand entry.
The six-second whiz, Owen Ansah, and two women's squads have bagged their tickets to the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo (13-21 September). The German quartet of Kevin Kranz, Owen Ansah, Yannick Wolf, and Lucas Ansah-Peprah picked up an early qualification by finishing second in their heat at 38.33 seconds in the World Relays, held in Guangzhou.
The women's 4x400m relay team, comprising Skadi Schier, Johanna Martin, Mona Meyer, and Eileen Demes, took the second spot too, powered by a favorable heat draw and a time of 3:28.63. Despite placing third in the women's 4x100m relay, Nele Jaworski, Jessica-Bianca Wessolly, Rebekka Haase, and Sophia Junk qualified as well, thanks to the sixth-fastest time of 42.98 seconds. The sprint relay team didn't have Gina Lückenkemper, who secured the German women's Olympic bronze in Paris.
The mixed 4x400m relay team, with Manuel Sanders, Annkathrin Hoven, Emil Agyekum, and Jana Lakner, as well as the men's 4x400m team will have to make another run as they finished fourth and sixth in their respective heats. Overall, 14 nations have sealed their spots for the World Championships in the 4x100m (men and women) and 4x400m (men, women, and mixed) relays. Teams who missed the finals will face off again on Sunday, with two teams from each heat snagging tickets for Tokyo.
Preparing for the World Relays, the German team honed their skills at a training camp in Kuala Lumpur. The mixed 4x100m relay, where the ladies charge the first two legs and the chaps bring home the gold, marked its debut. The German team sprinted to fourth place in the heat. The rookie mixed 4x100m squad, including Sina Mayer, Sina Kammerschmitt, Aleksandar Askovic, and Chidiera Onuoha, finished at 41.43 seconds.
