Mouthwashes Serving More Than Just Fresh Breath

There's more to mouthwashes than just freshening your breath, according to Öko-Test. These oral hygiene products can help prevent cavities, plaque, and gum inflammation, contributing to overall oral health success. However, not all mouthwashes are created equal.

Öko-Test put 27 fluoride mouthwashes through their paces, including those from drugstores, (bio) supermarkets, and discounters, as well as six certified natural cosmetics products. The price range for these mouthwashes was quite diverse, stretching from a mere 0.83 euros to a pricier 8.24 euros per 500 milliliters.

Amazingly, Öko-Test was able to endorse over half of the products tested, including all the natural cosmetics options. Fluoride mouthwashes possess a cavity-preventing benefit, thanks to their ability to strengthen tooth enamel, remineralize tooth surfaces, and increase resistance to acids and bacteria. Manufacturers adhere to the maximum amounts recommended by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment.

Three Miss the Mark

Unfortunately, not all mouthwashes live up to the hype. Öko-Test identified three products with problematic ingredients: Listerine Cool Mint Mild, Lacalut Aktiv, and Parodontax Repair. These products received an "insufficient" rating partly due to the use of irritants such as sodium lauryl sulfate, chlorhexidine, and PEG/PEG derivatives.

Sodium lauryl sulfate can cause irritation, chlorhexidine can lead to discoloration, mouth burning, and increased tartar formation, and PEG/PEG derivatives can increase mucous membrane permeability to foreign substances.

Affordable, Approved Options

Not all hope is lost. Öko-Test gave their seal of approval to various mouthwashes, including budget-friendly options Dentabella mouthwash Antibacterial from Norma (0.83 euros) and Dontodent Anti-Bacterial Mouthwash from DM (0.83 euros).

As you navigate the world of mouthwashes, prioritize health and safety over flashy marketing. Avoid products containing irritants like sodium lauryl sulfate and chlorhexidine to maintain optimal oral health.

  • While fluoride mouthwashes offer cavity protection, excessive or unregulated use can be a concern.
  • Synthetic or potentially harmful ingredients, such as artificial sweeteners, colors, preservatives, phthalates, and microplastics, may raise concerns for sustainability and human health.
