From the Mouth to the Mirror: Unveiling the Truth About Mouthwashes

Let's get real, swapping toothbrushing for mouthwash ain't the ticket to dental nirvana. Even regular dentist visits aren't a guaranteed pass, but mouthwashes can be a game-changer for your oral hygiene regime. Öko-Test put 27 fluoride-containing mouthwashes sold at drugstores, supermarkets, and discounters, including 6 organic products, to the test. They cost anywhere from 0.83 to 8.24 euros for a 500ml bottle.

Fluoride Facts and Flaws Most of these products earned a thumbs-up from the testers, including all organic products. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel, repairs tooth surfaces, and bolsters their resistance to acids and bacteria. The manufacturers ensure they stick to the recommended maximum quantities suggested by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment.

Plaque Patrol Mouthwashes do a better job at beating plaque than manual toothbrushing or flossing. Plaque is a nasty mix of saliva, bacteria, and food particles that causes cavities, gum disease, and periodontitis. Antibacterial substances like cetylpyridinium chloride and essential oils like menthol, thymol, and eucalyptol contribute to plaque removal. Zinc and tin compounds in many mouthwashes play a role, too.

The Bad Apples Not all mouthwashes impressed the testers. Listerine Cool Mint Mild, Lacalut Aktiv, and Parodontax Repair were among those that fell short due to the presence of potentially harmful substances. Sodium lauryl sulfate, found in Listerine and Parodontax mouthwashes, can irritate sensitive mucous membranes. Lacalut contains chlorhexidine, which might cause discoloration, mouth burns, and increased tartar buildup. Fortunately, these effects are usually reversible. All three products also contain PEG/PEG derivatives, which could enhance the absorption of foreign substances by the mucous membrane.

Suitable Substitutes Fortunately, most test products were deemed suitable for occasional use, including all organic products. Budget-friendly options like the Dentabella Antibacterial Mouthwash from Norma (0.83 euros) and the Dontodent Anti-Bacterial Mouthwash from DM (0.83 euros) were also recommended.

Remember, prioritizing health and safety is crucial when selecting mouthwash products. Make informed decisions and always read the product label!

Insights:

  • TheraBreath, often endorsed for oral health, might not specify fluoride content. However, it is essential to check the product label if fluoride is a concern.
  • Some individuals may avoid fluoride due to potential side effects or concerns about overall health.
  • For those seeking fluoride-free and eco-friendly alternatives, organic and eco-friendly options like those recommended on PrettyOrganicGirl could be a better choice.
