Three law enforcement officers harmed by gunfire as they executed search warrants at a house in Virginia
In Gretna, Virginia, on Wednesday evening at around 5 p.m., a dramatic incident unfolded that left three Pittsylvania County Sheriff's deputies injured. The suspect, James Andru Lehnerd, allegedly opened fire on the deputies as they attempted to serve warrants and a protective order at a residence.
The deputies were injured by shrapnel, not bullets, during the incident. Fortunately, all injuries were non-life-threatening. One of the deputies was taken to the hospital for treatment but has since been released. Two deputies required hospital treatment, with one receiving care for their injuries.
The incident prompted a response from a SWAT team due to issues removing the victims from the home. The Virginia State Police have taken over the investigation of the incident.
Following the incident, the Pittsylvania County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office announced that James Andru Lehnerd will be charged in relation to the incident. Lehnerd has been charged with attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer. He was taken into custody without incident after a standoff and is currently being held without bond. Additional charges are expected, and a probable cause hearing is scheduled for October 23, 2025.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers face every day in the line of duty. Our thoughts are with the deputies and their families during this difficult time.
