Three individuals confirmed as the casualties following a mishap in Alpine region, Switzerland
Five individuals, including three Swiss nationals, perished in an avalanche incident close to Zermatt. The deceased include two men aged 38 and 35, and a 34-year-old woman, according to the police of the Canton of Wallis. The identities of the remaining two victims are yet to be disclosed by the authorities.
On Saturday, the lifeless bodies of the victims were discovered below the Rimpfischhorn in the Walliser Alps. Earlier, a group of mountaineers had come across several abandoned skis at approximately 4,000 meters in altitude. Upon reaching the summit of the Rimpfischhorn, they noticed the skis were still there and raised an alarm.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the group of five embarked early Saturday morning from the Britannia hut in the Saas-Fee area, intending to climb the roughly 4,200-meter-high Rimpfischhorn. Typical of the route, the hikers reportedly removed their skis at around 4,000 meters and continued on foot. They may have then been swept up in a snowslide and fallen into a crevasse.
Following the discovery of the skis, a helicopter from Air Zermatt, comprising a pilot, a doctor, and two rescuers, was dispatched to the area. About 500 meters below the skis, they initially located three bodies on a snow avalanche. A search of the surrounding rock face led to the discovery of two more lifeless mountaineers on a small snowfield.
While the authorities continue to investigate and identify the victims, no official statements or media outlets have disclosed their names or nationalities as of yet.
