Three Events for the Weekend: Community Clean-Up, Poetry Reading, Mozart Performance at the Metropolitan Opera House
In the heart of Riga, the Page Break poetry festival is reaching its climax this weekend. The event, known for its readings, workshops, and performances by both local and international poets, promises a celebration of literature and the arts.
Meanwhile, on April 26, Latvian Radio 3 will broadcast Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro' live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, USA. This broadcast is part of Latvian Radio 3's 'Saturday night at the opera' slot and features an impressive cast. Michael Samuel will be performing as Figaro, Federica Lombardi as Countess Rosina, Sunlee Pierce as Cherubino, and Joshua Hopkins as Count Almaviva. Olga Kulczynska will also be joining the cast as Suzanna.
On the same day, Latvia will host its annual Great Clean-up Day, or 'Talka'. This large-scale volunteer initiative, focused on cleaning and improving the environment, takes place across more than 1,500 locations nationwide and even in the Latvian diaspora.
The Great Clean-up Day, under the motto "We are nature! We are together! We are Latvia!", involves local communities in removing hazardous waste and enhancing landscapes. This year, two new "Laimes koku" (Happiness Tree) parks were created during the event, symbolizing its environmental and cultural significance.
Participants can find detailed information about local clean-up events, coordinators, and participation instructions on the official Lielā Talka website (talkas.lv). The event combines coordinated group efforts with options for individual participation, allowing everyone to contribute to the cause.
For those interested in taking part, April 26 is a day for action and unity. Many people will be out cleaning, using gloves, trash bags, and various cleaning equipment, working together to protect and celebrate nature.
