In a surprising move, Russian President Vladimir Putin has instated a three-day ceasefire, effective as of midnite last Thursday. The truce was reported by Russian media outlets, coinciding with the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany's surrender, often referred to as "the great victory." The ceasefire ends on Saturday evening.

Quiet Skies After Truce kicks In

With the truce in motion, the skies above Ukraine remained peaceful, devoid of the usual relentless drone barrages. Neither Ukrainian nor Russian parties reported attacks during the night or early morning hours, despite reports of air alerts during the night.

However, the Ukrainian military disclosed that Russian forces conducted airstrikes in the eastern Ukrainian region of Sumy. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties or significant damages. As of yet, neither a military nor political appraisal has been issued to confirm if the ceasefire is holding.

Yesterday, both sides reported relentless drone attacks and occasional rocket and cruise missile strikes. Russian authorities documented 524 Ukrainian drone assaults, causing widespread chaos in civil aviation, affecting more than 60,000 passengers due to flight delays and cancellations.

Ceasefire labeled a Political Gimmick by Ukraine

The truce initiated by Putin began at midnight CET and will last for 72 hours until Saturday evening. It coincides with Russia's celebration of its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Ukraine has refused to comply with the ceasefire and labels it a political ploy. Instead, Kyiv demands a 30-day ceasefire. During the brief ceasefire announced by Russia during Easter, Ukraine reported countless violations by Russian forces.

Since his inauguration in January, former U.S. President Donald Trump has been striving to negotiate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. however, Putin had previously rejected a joint U.S.-Ukraine proposal for an unconditional ceasefire in March.

  2. As the three-day ceasefire between Ukrainian and Russian forces remains in effect, general news outlets continue to cover war-and-conflicts and politics, identifying the ceasefire as a significant event in global developments.
  3. On h2 news, alerts on potential escalations in Ukraine during the truce have been less frequent, reflecting the temporarily quiet skies above the war-torn region.
  4. Meanwhile, discussions on the viability and potential extension of the ceasefire continue in the political sphere, with Ukraine demanding a more comprehensive 30-day truce as opposed to Putin's proposed three-day period.
