Three brief strategies for managing the stadium

The search for information on the proposed expansion and modernization of the Niederrhein Stadium in Oberhausen has yielded limited results, with no specific details about the Kanalkurve and surrounding areas available as of mid-2025.

However, past discussions have revolved around modernizing parts of the stadium to enhance fan facilities, update stands, and meet contemporary standards. Notable plans include the construction of a new tribune in the area of the current Kanalkurve, replacing it with a covered structure extending directly to the playing field. This new tribune will feature around 3,000 seats, a large VIP area, and eight additional VIP boxes.

The city's leadership, including Mayor Daniel Schranz, has given these plans a positive response. RWO Chairman Marcus Uhlig is particularly focused on making the stadium suitable for 3rd division use and potential daily usage.

Other proposed measures include modernizing the technology, upgrading the video surveillance system, and setting up an electronic entrance system. The city's plan towards the canal includes upgrading the entire area with a 365-day gastronomic offer, resting areas for pedestrians and cyclists, and a small boat dock.

In the rear area of the new tribune, towards the canal, a multifunctional space will be created for office and commercial use, as well as year-round marketing opportunities for VIP areas. RWO's ideas for the new tribune also include channel tourism and commercial usage possibilities.

The catalog of measures also includes the replacement of a floodlight mast demolished in March 2014, conversion to LED technology, and renewal of the lawn heating, which was installed in 2008 for around 850,000 euros. However, the current operational status of the lawn heating is uncertain after a long period of inactivity.

The cost for the individual measures and the overall package remains undisclosed. The city of Oberhausen and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen have presented this catalog of measures with the aim of making the Niederrhein Stadium fit for the Bundesliga.

For the most up-to-date and detailed information on modernization plans for the Niederrhein Stadium, it is recommended to consult official sources such as the Rot-Weiss Oberhausen club website, the Oberhausen city administration, or local sports news outlets that cover stadium developments.
