Threatening actions aimed at NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani were allegedly perpetrated by an individual from Texas, as stated by the district attorney in Queens.

In a concerning development, a Texas man named Jeremy Fistel has been accused of making terroristic threats against New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. The Queens District Attorney's Office announced the indictment against Fistel on September 15, following his arrest in Texas on September 11.

Fistel, who pleaded not guilty to several charges, including four counts of making a terroristic threat as a hate crime, allegedly threatened to have Mamdani's family murdered and to shoot him. The graphic messages, which were in the form of voicemails and one email, were sent between June and July of this year.

If elected, Mamdani, the Democratic nominee and frontrunner in the New York City mayoral race, would be the first Muslim elected mayor of New York City. He has drawn national attention for his progressive proposals such as free buses, city-run grocery stores, and a millionaire's tax.

The alleged threats come amid heightened tensions nationwide, following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The indictment against Fistel also comes during a time when there is increased concern for the safety of elected officials.

Renee Anderson, a digital producer at our New York office who covers breaking news and other local stories, reported that an order of protection has been issued, prohibiting Fistel from making contact with Mamdani. Fistel was granted $30,000 bail and is due back in court on Nov. 19.

Mamdani has previously expressed threats and hate faced during the mayoral race. The NYPD typically does not provide security details to mayoral candidates, but can do so if there is a significant threat assessment.

J.C. Polanco, an assistant law professor at the University of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx, stated that the alleged threat goes beyond physical violence and poses a real danger to politics and democracy.

World leaders are gathering in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly, adding another layer of security to the city. As the mayoral race heats up, the safety and well-being of all candidates remain a top priority.
