Get ready, Cologne! Almost a quarter of its residents will be switching locations on Wednesday. Reason? Three World War II bombs, discovered during roadwork, have necessitated an evacuation. This move is one of the city's largest in recent memory, as a city spokesperson has revealed.

Affected Areas and Institutions

The evacuation zone includes a hospital, two elderly care homes, and various bridges over the Rhine, with the heavily trafficked Hohenzollern Bridge included. Notable buildings like the Cologne City Hall, the Museum Ludwig, and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum are also part of the affected areas.

Broadcast Hardships

The main building of the RTL television station, located in the historical Cologne exhibition halls, is within the evacuation zone. While the early morning shows "Punkt 6" and "Punkt 7" will be broadcast live from the Deutz district, "Punkt 8" won't air. The entire RTL station building will be evacuated by 8:00 AM, with most employees working from a portable office. Meanwhile, "Punkt 12", "RTL Aktuell", and the "RTL Nachtjournal" will be broadcast live from Berlin's studio. The daily TV program of ntv will be produced in Cologne-Ossendorf from 7:00 AM.

Old Town Threatened

The entire old town of Cologne is also within the evacuation radius, forcing 58 hotels and other accommodations to be cleared. Fortunately, the Cologne Cathedral lays just outside the restricted area.

Origins of the Bombs

The bombs are two American 20-ton bombs and one American 10-ton bomb, revealed on Monday.

History of Bomb Discoveries

Cologne isn't new to bomb defusal operations. During World War II, the city experienced extensive bombing, as demonstrated by events like the first "Thousand Bomber Raid" by the British Royal Air Force on a German metropolis on May 30-31, 1942.
