Thousands flock to debut of Labyrinth on the Thames, selling out all six performances
Labyrinth On The Thames 2023: A Unique Dance Music Festival at Greenwich's Old Royal Naval College
Last summer, Greenwich played host to a remarkable dance music event that brought together live and electronic artists in a unique riverside setting. Labyrinth On The Thames 2023 was a two-week-long festival held at the Old Royal Naval College, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The event, which took place from August 1 to August 10, 2023, was the inaugural edition of a series that spanned over two-and-a-half years. It was a bold step in preserving heritage while keeping it alive and vibrant, as stated by Kate Miners, director of public engagement & commercial at Old Royal Naval College.
The festival featured a diverse lineup of 31 artists, delivering 45 hours of performances. One of the highlights was Black Coffee, who headlined the event across two sold-out nights, followed by Empire Of The Sun's first London show in six years. Other notable artists included Solomun, Fisher, and Anjunadeep Open Air.
The series also included two full-time internships in partnership with the University of Greenwich. The partnership between Old Royal Naval College and Labyrinth Events was successful, according to both parties, and they are looking forward to further development of the Labyrinth On The Thames concept in future years.
The feedback received from artists, industry, and fans exceeded expectations, according to Nick Castleman, co-founder of Labyrinth Events. Over 50,000 people visited the Old Royal Naval College for Labyrinth On The Thames, many for the first time.
As part of its pledge to give back, the event raised funds for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice through on-site charity activations. The event took place against the backdrop of the UNESCO World Heritage site, Old Royal Naval College, and utilized impressive visual effects such as Piko 33 lasers to enhance the experience.
Despite the event's scale, no explicit negative impacts or controversies regarding the event’s effect on the UNESCO site appeared in the search results, suggesting that the event was managed in a way that respected the landmark’s status.
Labyrinth On The Thames 2023 was more than just a dance music festival. It was a cultural milestone that demonstrated the creative integration of modern cultural events with historically significant locations. The event's success has set a precedent for future collaborations between the Old Royal Naval College and Labyrinth Events, promising even more exciting events in the years to come.
