The Club World Cup saw a new record being set on Sunday, as Bayern Munich thrashed Auckland City in a breathtaking 10-0 victory. This surpassed the previous record for the largest margin of victory, previously held by Al-Hilal after their 6-1 win against Al Jazira in 2021[1][2][3]. And it was none other than Bayern legend Thomas Müller who delivered the goods.

"It's not about praising us, we just did our job, we took it seriously," said coach Vincent Kompany after the match[4]. "When a team sits deep, it's not guaranteed that you'll score ten against them." Bayern's imposing display could prove crucial in the group stages, with the goal difference playing a significant role. Leroy Sané was absent from the starting lineup following his surprise move to Galatasaray Istanbul[4].

Müller, who is set to depart Bayern after an illustrious career, showcased his class once again. The 35-year-old created several memorable moments, scoring twice in the match[4]. His first goal in the final minute was a stunning volley with a twisted body, a trademark Müller finish. Earlier, he also set up Michael Olise's 3-0 goal with a rapid turn and precise finish. Müller now has 250 goals in all competitions for Bayern, and could soon celebrate his 35th (!) title[4].

The Cincinnati audience were quick to fall in love with Müller[4]. With Major League Soccer rumored to be a possible destination for Muller's future career, they might see more of him in the future. Los Angeles is said to be Muller's preferred choice[4].

Müller Moments Abound

Auckland's amateur side were in awe of Müller, pushing for selfies and souvenirs[4]. They didn't seem interested in Mannaj Musiala, who returned with a hat-trick following an injury layoff. Olise, who had left them dazed with his performance, and global superstar Harry Kane also went unnoticed. Müller was the focus, the icon, the epitome of the tournament[4].

Muller seemed to relish the adoration[4]. Captain Manuel Neuer saluted him with MVP chants, while Aleksandar Pavlovic gushed: "Everyone loves Thomas Müller!"[4]

The heat took its toll on Bayern, but they passed their "little character test" with ease, setting their sights on the title[4]. They next face Boca Juniors from Argentina on June 20 in Miami, followed by Portuguese record champions Benfica Lisbon on June 24 in Charlotte[5]. Muller is certainly on fire: "We've got proper Boca."
