Tragedy in the Karakoram: Laura Dahlmeier Dies in Climbing Accident
In a heartbreaking turn of events, biathlon Olympic gold medalist turned alpinist, Laura Dahlmeier, has tragically died following a climbing accident on Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountains in northern Pakistan.
The rescue mission, which involves a team of mountaineers, porters, and German climber Thomas Huber, along with two American climbers who were attempting the same ascent, is now focused on retrieving her body amidst challenging weather conditions.
Dahlmeier was injured after falling rocks hit her at approximately 18,700 feet on Monday, July 28, 2025. Her rope partner, Marina Eva, is uninjured and played a critical role by sending the distress signal that initiated the rescue operation.
The rescue team, including Thomas Huber, was airlifted to the base camp of Laila Peak. Plans were made to airlift Dahlmeier to Skardu once conditions allowed, but these plans became moot after confirmation of her death. Another German climber may have joined the rescue from Masherbrum, but this is unconfirmed.
Military helicopters have been unable to conduct an aerial extraction due to persistent bad weather conditions, including low visibility, rain, and strong winds. As a result, the rescue team is proceeding on the ground.
Thomas Huber, a world-class climber, was flown by helicopter from the Latok group to the base camp of Leila Peak to join the rescue efforts. His brother, Alexander Huber, a mountain guide and top alpinist, confirmed his involvement in the mission. Alexander Huber hails from Bavaria, Germany, and is a close friend of Dahlmeier due to their shared love of mountaineering.
Legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner has commented that Thomas Huber will do everything to help and rescue Dahlmeier. The German Press Agency reported on the involvement of Alexander Huber in the rescue mission for Dahlmeier.
Efforts are now focused on retrieving Dahlmeier's body despite the difficult weather conditions. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and the entire mountaineering community during this difficult time.
