This year's Archival Assembly #3 Events to Check Out in 2024

The third edition of Archival Assembly, a celebration of moving images and their historical significance, is set to take place from 17th to 22nd September. This year's theme, 'Resounding Archives: The Politics of Listening to the Moving Image', promises an immersive exploration into the power of archives and their role in shaping our understanding of history.

The event kicks off with the Opening Programme, a curated selection of key archival works and discussions that will set the tone for the week. Among the featured pieces is Kassieren, a documentary by Amelie Vierbuchen, Franca Papa, and Lea Sprenger, which will be screened during the opening.

Throughout the week, several notable films and documentaries will take centre stage. Robina Rose's Nightshift is one such work, scheduled for screening at Arsenal 1 on Tuesday, Sep 17, starting at 21:00. Another highlight is Prem Kapoor's Badnam Basti, which will be screened at the same venue on Thursday, Sep 19, also at 21:00.

The event also includes events like Found Futures II: Political Archives, a cinematic or documentary exploration into political archives, and Resonance Spiral by Filipa César & Marinho de Pina, a piece engaging with archives, art, and historical memory or cultural dialogue. Both events will be screened at Arsenal 1.

In addition to films and documentaries, Archival Assembly #3 offers installations and talks. Dana Iskakova's video installation Whose Voice is This? will be on display at Arsenal 1, opening on Tuesday, Sep 17 at 16:00 and running through Sunday 22.

A talk, A Future for AIDS Film Archives, will discuss depictions of AIDS in film history and reflect on new dimensions of social exclusion during the 1980s AIDS epidemic. Another engaging talk, ARchipelago, will focus on the war and postwar periods of former Yugoslavia, presenting an augmented reality experience and talk. This talk will take place at sinema transtopia, Lindower Str. 20/22/Haus C, Wedding, from 15:00 to 16:30, and is free of charge.

The week concludes with screenings of Fi Al-Dar Ghariba by Youssef Fahdeh on Friday, Sep 20, and Maya Deren's Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti on Sunday, Sep 22, both starting at 21:00 at Arsenal 1.
