Unapologetically bold and unconventional, photographer Oliviero Toscani's name is synonymous with audacity, especially given his lengthy tenure as Art Director at Benetton spanning over two decades. His daring campaigns burst onto the scene, taking on topics many considered taboo, such as sex, racial prejudice, war, capital punishment, and AIDS.

Predictably, controversy swirled around some of these initiatives, the result of mix-and-match business with social commentary that elicited criticism, scrutiny, and even lawsuits. In his latest venture, Toscani captured global portraits for the project Razza Humana, aspiring to encapsulate the human essence.

Toscani's provocative campaigns continue to leave indelible marks, evident in the recent retrospective exhibit in Milan titled, "Oliviero Toscani: 50 Years of Brilliant Failures." This milestone showcased 400 of his powerful images and key events, including a candid CNN interview in which Toscani, now 75, offered his frank opinions against freedom, immigration, and Donald Trump.

"Few people are free," he asserted. "Those who are must work harder to demonstrate their freedom to the rest."

Beyond Benetton, Toscani's collaborations have extended to fashion publications like Vogue, Elle, GQ, and i-D.

Referred to as a trailblazer and a spark that ignited a revolution in the ad and fashion industries, Toscani's provocative campaigns had a profound impact on the advertising landscape. His work with Benetton popularized the concept of advertising as a tool for social commentary rather than merely product promotion.

Merged with the brand's established identity, these controversial campaigns catapulted Benetton onto the global stage. By the '80s and '90s, Benetton boasted over 7,000 stores in various markets, with Toscani's groundbreaking approach inspiring other brands to incorporate social themes into their marketing strategies.

Sadly, with time, the original shock value of these campaigns waned, and the fashion landscape evolved rapidly. Benetton struggled to adapt, eventually encountering financial challenges brought about by an increasingly competitive retail environment. The company declared bankruptcy and announced plans to close over 400 stores worldwide.

Despite these challenges, Toscani's legacy lives on, continuing to inspire brands today as they strive to incorporate social messages into their advertising strategies while navigating the complexities of an ever-shifting retail landscape.
