Unleashing the German MMA Frenzy!
Hey there, reader!
Every now and then, I catch myself reminiscing about the good old days when my father and I would discuss boxing. Back then, it was all about the 90's, Axel Schulz, George Foreman, and the infamous MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. I was barely two years old when the German boxing scene was abuzz with the thrill of it all. But hey, who needed age when the adrenaline was flowing?
Fast forward to today, and the martial arts landscape in Germany has certainly evolved. Introducing you to Mixed Martial Arts, or simply put – MMA! It's the latest craze taking the nation by storm.
So, what's happening in the German MMA scene?
Let me catch you up on the newest excitement in the world of martial arts. I recently found myself in the middle of the action at the "OKTAGON MMA" event in Cologne, and let me tell you, it was an unforgettable experience! With 20,000 passionate fans packing the Lanxess Arena, OKTAGON MMA's debut in Germany went off with a bang. As a matter of fact, this was the biggest event in Germany's MMA history. A sure sign that MMA hype is well and truly here.
Who's who in the MMA scene today?
The modern-day MMA heroes that rock the German scene? You might recognize names like Christian Eckerlin, Stephan Pütz, or Max Coga. Just like their 90's role models, these are faces at the forefront of bringing MMA into the mainstream. The only difference is, they're creating their own seasons in the digital age, via YouTube and Instagram.
Parallels between the heyday of Boxing and MMA
There are definitely some parallels between the popular 90's boxing era and the current MMA hype. Just like back then, shareable stories propelled the heroes of the scene to fame. Both Maske and Schulz made their mark on radio and TV, and now, Eckerlin and Pütz imaginatively leverage YouTube and Instagram.
Comparing the hosts, Wilfried Sauerland's boxing promotion journey in Africa in the 70's mirrors Ondrey Novotny's setup with "OKTAGON MMA" in Germany. What's unique, though, is that the MMA hype rose at an extraordinary pace.
The Secret Sauce: Storytelling
Eckerlin and Pütz skillfully used storytelling to build an intimacy with their followers, sharing aspects of their private lives on YouTube. With the appeal of the "OKTAGON MMA" makers adding to the mix, Germany was quickly hooked on the new martial arts sensation.
Just like in the boxing days of the 90's, the Hip and Happening crowd was in the front rows. This time, known personalities like soccer star Nico Schlotterbeck, rap star Gzuz, and other YouTube sensations helped spread the word of MMA like wildfire.
A Digital Revolution in Promotion and Media
What made this all possible today? The power of social media and influencers! Fans had access to the event on-demand, at their leisure. The days of tuning in at a specific time on TV are behind us. The world is now an 'Anytime, Anywhere' experience.
Boxing's Comeback: Boxing 2.0?
My wildest dream? To witness a resurrection of that thrilling boxing hype, transforming it into Boxing 2.0! I hope the MMA strategy of creatively leveraging social media will serve as a game-changer in the boxing scene as well.
